Living in a foreign country, learning a new language and customs, making new friends, starting a new life? These are all things a person has to do when joining the Peace Corps. These are things hopefully one day I will be experiencing. That's right I want to join the Peace Corps. This all may sound really crazy and I'm sure some of you are like "yeah right like that's really going to happen" but I believe it will.
About two years ago God really opened my eyes to how much I love helping people and doing mission work and that's what the Peace Corps is all about (except without the religion part, but hopefully I can share Gods love as well). The Peace Corps organization takes volunteers and sends them overseas to a county in need. Volunteers are sent to countries based on there skills and the countries needs at the time. Each volunteer commits to two years overseas where you spend the first three months in training learning the language and customs of your country and from there are sent to your post station where you live with a host family and begin working in your field of expertise.
Ive bounced around the idea of the Peace Corps for quite sometime now. Ive read books and have done many hours of research on the Internet but my decision was recently made when a friend of mine told me about his cousin who is in the Peace Corps. His cousin Andrew is living in the country of Azerbaijan and writes a blog (I will post the link to his blog at the bottom, I invite you to read his story) about his everyday experience as a PCV (Peace Corps Volunteer). Reading his blog and feeling like I am right there along side him in his adventures has really instilled a passion in me to join the Peace Corps after college. I want to attend college for four years and then join in the field of education (particularly math) and move to a country in need of education where I can make a difference.
This is all kind of crazy and new to me as well but I feel as though this is my "calling" in life. God has placed a passion for this inside of my heart and I know he has great things in store for me. So I invite you to pray with me about this decision so that HIS will may be done in my life.
